When talking about attachments, we often start with the fact that the machine — whether it’s a skid steer, a compact track loader (CTL), a backhoe or a wheel loader — is the base platform that allows the owner/operator to do a job. The base purchase of that machine comes with a standard bucket, which is great for many applications.

Tracks and pneumatic tires represent a significant percentage of total cost of ownership (TCO) for any piece of landscaping equipment. The rent vs. purchase equation is discussed at length in the landscaping industry—but the conversation is most often geared towards the primary equipment platform: the skid steer, the mini ex, etc. The decision to rent or purchase attachments and other ancillary equipment shares many of the same financial considerations, and there are several factors that help a business owner determine whether it makes more sense to rent or purchase attachments.

There is no right answer that will work for every business owner. Each individual should look at factors such as cash flow, taxes, estimated utilization rates, as well as associated costs like maintenance, depreciation and resale values. Additional factors include the size of the operation and the types of jobs and applications in which the attachment will be used.

Semper Fi Land Services: Tips for Growing a Successful Business

Robert Velazquez —founder of Semper Fi Land Services in Aurora, Ill.—is not your average business owner. He started his landscaping business in 2004 when he was still a teenager, fresh out of Marine Corp. training. Like many, his first landscaping jobs involved doing most, if not all, of the work himself while rounding up borrowed trucks and equipment, but today he runs a flourishing business with a large fleet of equipment and 35 employees.

Starting a business like Semper Fi wasn’t without its challenges. After building his customer base throughout 2004 and 2005, Velazquez got news that he was being deployed. “I was in the Marine Corps reserves, and we got notified that we were being deployed to Iraq,” Velazquez explains. “So all the customers I had built up from 2004 and 2005, I just sent them a letter saying, ‘Hey, I have an obligation. I’m going to Iraq, I’ll be back in a year.’ Didn’t really close the business, but put it on hold. Came back, sent them a letter and said, ‘Hey, I’m back, and I’m going to start my business again.’ Many of those customers I have still today.”

CASE Plants 30 Trees for #CASETrees Social Media Campaign

CASE Construction Equipment’s #CASETrees social media event for landscape and nursery businesses has resulted in the planting of 30 new trees in Racine, Wisconsin. The trees were planted in three locations: Lockwood Park, Johnson Park and Racine Zoo.

Tree selection and planting was conducted in coordination with the Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department.

CASE to Plant Trees to Honor Landscapers

CASE will plant a tree for every landscaping company that uploads a crew photo to the CASE Facebook page or Instagram with the #CASETrees hashtag in honor of Earth Day.

CASE Construction Equipment has launched the #CASETrees social media event for landscape and nursery businesses. Each company that uploads a photo of its crew to the CASE Facebook page or Instagram before Earth Day (April 22) and uses the #CASETrees hashtag will have a tree planted in its honor by CASE.

Landscaping Pros Share Tips for Success

Dennis Elverman and Ross Swartz grew up across the pond from each other on the same stretch of rural county road near Wilmot, Wisconsin. Both men have had an impact on residential and commercial landscaping in southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois. Elverman is entering his 45th year as a professional landscaper this spring (28 as the owner/operator of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin-based Elverman Landscapes). Swartz has been working the family nursery and landscaping business (Paul Swartz Nursery) since the 1970s, and is entering the first year of a two-year term as the president of the Wisconsin Nursery and Landscape Association.

The size of their businesses may be different (Elverman runs a crew of three; Swartz runs numerous crews and a fully operational nursery), but many of the themes shared by each of them are universal to all landscaping businesses: hard work and reputation will take you places – as long as you’re prepared for what’s ahead and you’ve got a plan for managing the workload.

Meet Ahmed Hassan & Sustainable Heroes

If this world has taught us anything it’s that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. For some, that hero is Ahmed Hassan, an experienced landscaping expert and TV host who initially rose to fame hosting a variety of HGTV and DIY Network shows.

A California native, Hassan has collaborated and worked on several landscape and construction projects throughout the country. Many of those projects are the work of his new organization known as, “Sustainable Heroes.” A freelance group of professionals including contractors, carpenters, landscapers, project managers, designers and more. The Heroes travel the country and choose humanitarian and sustainability projects where their charitable works will make a positive impact in the community.

Extra Mile Landscape Gets Control with CASE Alpha Series Skid Steers

A true four seasons state, Wisconsin landscapers must diversify in order to remain profitable year-round. For Aron Rodman, owner and founder of Extra Mile Landscape in West Bend, Wis., there may be no more important piece of equipment in allowing him to do this than his skid steer.

“As the economy changes, we’ve found the skid steer loader is more and more important,” Rodman explains. “One skilled operator can use it for just about anything—putting new lawns in during the spring, mulching garden beds, drilling holes for trees, tree spades and brush cutting in the fall. Come winter, we rely on skid steer loaders for plowing snow and loading it into trucks. I can move more snow in eight hours with a skid steer loader than I can in 20 hours with a truck.“
