CASE Construction Equipment is welcoming a new dealer to its North America network – CASE Power & Equipment of Pennsylvania.

Kevin Smith has spent his entire life around backhoes. His father started a small excavating company in 1984 with a single CASE 580D, and Smith spent most of his childhood in and around equipment.

“My dad started a construction company named Casey’s backhoe service — started with one 580D at the time,” says Smith. “[He was] doing pretty much the same thing I do; digging residential services, undergrounds for power and gas, and a lot of commercial and residential work. He took us with him all the time, and it was just natural to be on a machine and around it.”

The CASE 580 EV, the construction industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader, has been honored with a 2020 Innovative Iron Award from Compact Equipment magazine.

The awards are presented annually, highlighting the most inventive off-highway equipment, diesel engines, hand tools and OEM services and systems released to the market.

A backhoe loader truly is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment available—whether it’s on the jobsite, in a disaster response situation or a variety of other specialty applications. When talking about attachments, we often start with the fact that the machine — whether it’s a skid steer, a compact track loader (CTL), a backhoe or a wheel loader — is the base platform that allows the owner/operator to do a job. The base purchase of that machine comes with a standard bucket, which is great for many applications.

The rent vs. purchase equation is discussed at length in the landscaping industry—but the conversation is most often geared towards the primary equipment platform: the skid steer, the mini ex, etc. The decision to rent or purchase attachments and other ancillary equipment shares many of the same financial considerations, and there are several factors that help a business owner determine whether it makes more sense to rent or purchase attachments.

There is no right answer that will work for every business owner. Each individual should look at factors such as cash flow, taxes, estimated utilization rates, as well as associated costs like maintenance, depreciation and resale values. Additional factors include the size of the operation and the types of jobs and applications in which the attachment will be used.
